Lipovane's icons
Collection of Lipovane's icons that is one of the most significant in the city stands out against large number of complexes which are included in the structure of the Bleschunov's museum. Lipovane is the branch of Russian Orthodox Old-believers who in the XVIII - XIXth centuries were compelled to run away on coast of Danube by virtue of historical circumstances and to take away attributes of their faith with themselves. Their art has changed on new ground. It imbibed magnificent beauty of surrounding South nature and decorative features of Ukrainian folk art. It is easy to recognize Lipovane's icons by their shining gold background, which is frequently covered with engraved patterns in forms of magnificent plant ornament executed in a special technique. The same patterns borrowed from folk art were outlined also on saints' attires and even on their nimbus sometimes. Though these icons preserve art features peculiar to ancient painting and follow canons laid down by church, there is architecture contemporary with a painter instead of stylized incredible palaces on them and interiors of temples are filled with concrete details. It is interesting, that Lipovane like to represent not so much God images (Trinity or Jesus Christ) as more earthy and clear to people Godmother and Saint Nicholas, a patron of peasants, fishermen, seafarers and travelers.
